Found a weasel? How to identify it and whether it needs help
The weasel (Mustela nivalis) is the smallest carnivore in Europe. An adult female can weigh just 60โ70 grams. For comparison: it's lighter than a pack of butter. Despite its size, it's a highly effective predator: it hunts mice, voles and other rodents in quantities far exceeding its own body weight.
It's widespread across Italy โ fields, roadsides, dry-stone walls, gardens โ but rarely seen. When it is spotted, it often causes unjustified alarm.
How to identify it
Weasel: extremely long, slender body, very short legs. Rufous-brown back, white belly. Short tail (less than half the body length), no black tip. Weight: 60โ250 g.
Stone marten: much larger (1.5โ2.5 kg), forked white throat patch, long tail. Prefers human structures (lofts, warehouses).
Polecat (Mustela putorius): similar shape to weasel but larger (300โ800 g), darker colouring with pale facial mask, characteristic smell when threatened.
When it really needs help
The weasel is active both day and night, so seeing one in daylight isn't automatically a sign of distress. It moves very fast, in darting movements.
Intervene if:
- It's motionless, not responding to your presence
- It has visible injuries
- It's been caught by a cat โ even without visible injuries: bacteria from a cat's mouth are lethal
- It seems disoriented or is circling
- It's a juvenile (MayโJuly) found alone without its mother
Don't intervene if:
- It moves quickly and disappears โ it's hunting
- It looks at you and runs away โ that's fine
How to pick it up
Minor but real: the weasel can bite, and despite its size it hurts (proportionally, its bite pressure is impressive).
- Thin but sturdy work gloves
- Cover with a cloth and wrap quickly
- Cardboard box with holes, lined with soft fabric
- Quiet, dark, room temperature
A weasel in your hands wriggles enormously: hold it firmly without squeezing the chest.
What not to do
Don't improvise feeding โ it's a carnivore and rehabilitation diet requires whole mice (source of calcium, vitamin D, fibre). Giving it chicken or other meat causes serious deficiencies.
Don't keep it in too small a box: it needs room to move, otherwise it develops confinement stress within hours.
Something worth knowing
The weasel is the only mustelid that changes coat colour based on latitude and season. In mountain and northern areas it turns completely white in winter (the stoat, Mustela erminea, is a different species but with the same mechanism). Weasels of the Po Valley remain tawny all year round.
Legal protection
The weasel is protected under Law 157/1992 (Annex A). It cannot be hunted, trapped or killed. It is protected precisely because it plays a fundamental ecological role in rodent control.
